Who we are

The Stop Real ID Now activism campaign is made up of people from all over the US and outside, with many different political perspectives, and all kinds of different backgrounds. We'll use this thread to introduce ourselves.

If you'd like to join us, just reply (with your real name or a pseudonym, and a link off to your web site or profile page if you want) and tell us something about why you want to get involved ... and welcome!

Stop Real ID Now! said...

I'm Deborah Pierce, Executive Director of Privacy Activism. I'm against Real ID for a lot of reasons, including its disastrous effects on privacy, identity theft, and civil liberties -- and the shameful way it was passed into law without any debate or vote.

I started up the Stop Real ID Now activism campaign to complement the other efforts against Real ID. By using social networks, we can get the word out and involve a lot of people who otherwise wouldn't participate; and I believe that a grassroots effort like this can help bring people with very different viewpoints together to work towards our shared goal.

Thanks for being here, and I hope you decide to join us.

I will never comply with this totalitarian act. Everyone must realize that this will leave no privacy for anyone. You can't cheat on your spouse, or work under the table without your government(...or whoever else holds the power)knowing. They'll know where to find you for whatever reason they choose. They'll know if you go to church, they'll know if you eat fast food and what food it is. You'll be entirely exposed. JUST SAY NO! Fight for what you believe in. LIVE FREE OR DIE!!!!!!!!!

Greg Pincus here, one of the 'hosts' of this blog. I share the same reasons Deborah stated for her opposition to Real ID, but I'm also involved here because I don't believe there's time left for those of us who care to sit back and let others do something. Trying to use the power of the 'net to create change is critical now, and will continue to be critical in the years ahead. And Real ID is such a humdinger of a cause... a way to unify disparate groups, something that I also view as critical moving forward.

Glad to be here!

Hi, I am Kara and I oppose Real ID for the effect it will have on the transgendered community. Not to mention the massive invasion of privacy, especially for any group that is not within the powers-that-be definition of 'the norm'.

BTW, I live in the DC area now but used to live in New Hampshire. Yay for NH opposing it!

Reducing our freedoms will reduce our vitality and diminish everyone's quality of life.

The right to privacy is critical to ensuring the world doesn't become a total police state.

There are many practical reasons as well such as the money it will drain and the flawed technology involved.

I'm supporting this effort for all the reasons there are.

I'm Jon Pincus. People have already mentioned a lot of the reasons I'm against Real ID; our What's wrong with Real ID page has a lot more of them.

From the security perspective, the current regulations are appallingly bad: without encryption, anybody can read all the personal information on any drivers licenses, there are no restrictions on what DMVs or others can do with all this information once they scan it, and so on and so on. Can you say "identity theft"? And terrorists aren't stupid: they can steal identities (or buy them from the professional identity thieves), so it won't keep us any safer from them either ...

Any way you look at it, Real ID is a disaster, and needs to be repealed. Like Greg says, now's the time to get involved. So here I am.

I'm Mike Stollenwerk with the FairfaxCountyPrivacyCouncil.org - repealing the REAL ID Act is vital to re-taking America back from the terrorists who have held this country hostage for too long now.

tell everyone about THE GREAT AMERICAN TRUCKOUT (see freedomtofacism.com and saveamericafund.org.) this is about the related problems of the north american union, the nafta superhighway, and mexican trucks coming in in a couple of weeks. These relate to real id as well. This is an opportunity to stop all of these.

I find it very disappointing the current goverment is using fascist tactics to enforce rules made by the adminstration. A democratic nation embraces debate and differences...not railroad laws that will have a huge impact on a various portions of our population, including the elderly community.
